Should Americans Be Able To Save Money By
Safely Importing Prescription Drugs From Canada?

HERE ARE THE FACTS:

Skyrocketing drug prices hurt consumers and taxpayers.

  • The average cost per prescription for seniors rose by 48% between 1992 and 2000, and is expected to continue increasing another 72% by 2010 (Families USA study).
  • Twenty-two percent of seniors let prescriptions go unfilled and skip doses of medicines to make prescriptions last longer, and close to one in four seniors report spending at least $100 per month on their prescription medicines (study by Dana Gelb Safran, ScD, Director of The Health Institute at Tufts-NEMC).
  • While prices soar, more Americans must pay for their medications out-of-pocket. The number of Americans without health insurance the entire year rose in 2002 to 43.6 million, or 15.2% of the population.

Many U.S. consumers are turning to other countries for relief.

  • Right now, consumers in Canada pay 30% to 50% less for the same drugs.
  • More than one million Americans already purchase their medicines from outside the American market.
  • In 2001, pharmaceutical companies imported $14.7 billion of drugs into the United States for Americans’ consumption.

To Congress and the Food and Drug Administration:

While many of us cannot afford the medications we need to stay healthy, our neighbors in Canada are able to buy the same prescription drugs we use, made by the same drug makers, for half the price.

It is time for our leaders in Washington, D.C., to help ease the burden on American taxpayers and consumers by giving us access to the drugs we need at the lower prices available in Canada.
